Patrick Porter is Professor of International Security and Strategy at the University of Birmingham. He is also Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). He was born and grew up in Australia, and graduated at the Universities of Melbourne and Oxford, where he obtained his doctorate in history. He has also worked at the Joint Services Command and Staff College at the British Defence Academy, King's College London, and the University of Exeter.
His research interests are American and British defence and foreign policy, great power politics and classical realism. He is the author of Military Orientalism: Eastern War through Western Eyes, and The Global Village Myth: Distance, War and the Limits of Power, and Blunder: Britain's War in Iraq (Oxford University Press) in November 2018.
