John Howe


Education: Shrewsbury School and Balliol College, Oxford.

Career as Civil Servant in MOD, including among other posts secondment to FCO as Counsellor in UK delegation to NATO, founding the MOD Arms Control Unit, being Private Secretary to Defence Secretary George Younger, being Deputy Secretary  (in modern parlance DG) for personnel and organisation, and deputy (one of two, at that time) to the Chief of Defence Procurement.

Left MOD in 2000 to join Thales. Vice Chairman Thales UK 2002-9. Since then, member of Thales UK Advisory Board, and various other part-time roles in the company, including Chair of Citylink, a consortium that has modernised the London Underground radio system.

Other roles have included Chairmanship of the Bonnart Trust (a human rights charity that supports scholarly work in the field of intolerance - stood down 2016), Presidency of EuroDefense UK, the UK branch of a European organisation that supports European defence and security (ongoing), Trusteeship of Map Action (a charity that provides expert services to support overseas disaster relief (stood down 2015), and membership of Durham University Business School Advisory Board (ongoing).
