General (Retd.) John Allen

Distinguished Fellow


General John Allen was President Obama’s first Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL until 2015. Prior to that, General Allen led a distinguished career in the United States government, holding various senior leadership roles, including Commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and US Forces in Afghanistan, Deputy Commander of US Central Command, and the Deputy Marine Corps Commander in Anbar province during the war in Iraq.

Allen is currently affiliated with the Brookings Institution, where he is a co-director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence, and is a senior fellow at the Merrill Center of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. In 2017 he was named as the next president of the Brookings Institution.
