Now in its 16th year, the conference focussed on 'Politics, Partners and Protection’ and explored some of the key issues confronting contemporary peacekeeping. The sessions included consideration of how peacekeeping can work when there is no peace to keep, future peacekeeping and the challenges of leadership in today’s complex missions.
The conference provided a meeting ground between the UN, policy-makers, practitioners and academics from the UK and across the world.
The keynote speech was given by Mr Ian Martin.
Mr. Martin has served the UN in several senior capacities over nearly 20 years and was a member of the UN’s High-Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations 2014-5. He was Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Libya, Nepal and Timor-Leste, head of the Gaza Board of Inquiry, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and Special Adviser to the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Additionally, Mr. Martin has served in Haiti, Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was Secretary General of Amnesty International from 1986 to 1992 and Vice-President of the International Center for Transitional Justice from 2002 to 2005. He has recently retired as Executive Director of Security Council Report.
