There is a general consensus that a compulsory ID card scheme within the UK has the potential to deliver real benefits. Areas where significant contributions are expected include the tackling organised crime, terrorism, illegal working and illegal immigration. However, this seems to be where the consensus stops.
Does the UK have a culture that will embrace such a scheme? Are the proposed biometric technologies sufficiently mature and adequate for unique identification purposes? Are the timescales realistic?
These are just some of the issues that will be debated at RUSI's Security and Resilience Department one day workshop. The main aim being to provide a privileged forum within which issues can be raised and resolved resulting in an increased clarity and understanding.
